Component Library Consolidation and Storybook Adoption

  • Services:
  • Industries: B2B SaaS

  • Timeline: Q1-Q2 2024

About the project

A US-based Series-B B2B SaaS company had grown to six product teams shipping features in parallel. Without a shared component library, each team had its own React components and its own visual patterns. The result was a fragmented UI that slowed onboarding and made cross-team work expensive. We built a token-based design system in React backed by Storybook, documented adoption conventions, and drove rollout across every team. This design system adoption example shows how a structured handoff turns scattered components into a single source of truth.

Background

The client reached Series-B with strong revenue growth but a codebase that had accumulated six years of divergent component work. Buttons, form fields, and data tables each had three or four variants spread across separate packages. No single engineer could hold the full set in their head. Design reviews were slow because designers had to reconcile design-tool components against production code manually. The problem was not taste but governance: there was no authoritative reference point teams could trust.

We help multi-team product organizations build component libraries that actually get adopted.

What we built

A Storybook-driven React component library that became the design system adoption example for the whole organization.

Token-based foundation Icon

Token-based foundation

We defined color, spacing, and typography as CSS custom properties. Every component consumes tokens, so a single-line change to a token value propagates correctly across the entire surface.

Storybook documentation hub Icon

Each component ships with usage stories, accessibility notes, and prop tables in Storybook. Designers verify behavior in the same artifact engineers use, closing the handoff gap that had slowed design reviews.

Incremental migration path Icon

Incremental migration path

We wrote codemods for the highest-volume components and phased-rollout guides for each team. This let teams adopt the library screen by screen without stopping feature work.

Visual regression coverage Icon

Visual regression coverage

Every component in Storybook has snapshot and interaction tests. The CI pipeline blocks a merge if a story deviates, so the library surface stays stable as contributors add features.

Takeaway

This design system adoption example shows that a component library succeeds through governance and tooling together, not either alone. Tokens give teams a shared vocabulary. Storybook gives them a verifiable reference. Codemods and phased rollout lower the cost of switching. When all three are in place, adoption becomes a series of small decisions rather than a big-bang rewrite, and six independent teams can converge on one visual language without stopping product delivery.
