A SaaS headless CMS is a content platform that the vendor hosts, scales and patches, while your team models content, edits it in a web app and fetches it over an API. If you want a shortlist: Contentful for large enterprise setups, Sanity for developers who want a customisable studio, Storyblok for marketing teams that need visual editing, and Hygraph when your front end is built on GraphQL.
This page compares eight SaaS platforms as of October 2026. Plan limits and prices come from each vendor’s pricing page, opened on 27 October 2026. Where we could not open a vendor page, the text says so. For the wider market, including self-hosted and Git-based tools, see our headless CMS platform directory and the headless CMS guide.
What does SaaS mean for a headless CMS in practice?
SaaS changes who carries the operational work. With a self-hosted CMS such as Strapi or Directus, your team runs the server, the database, backups and upgrades. With a SaaS CMS the vendor runs all of it and gives you an SLA tier, an API and an admin app.
That has three consequences. First, cost is a subscription tied to seats, locales, records or API calls, so it grows with usage. Second, you cannot change backend code, only configure it and extend it through apps, webhooks and the API. Third, your content sits on the vendor’s infrastructure, so data residency and exit plans need checking early.
How we compared the platforms
We looked at six things: whether the vendor hosts everything, how content is delivered (REST, GraphQL, or both), how editors work (forms or visual editing), what the free plan allows, how localisation is priced, and which team the product fits. We read each vendor’s pricing page and, for Sanity, Hygraph, Storyblok and DatoCMS, the docs pages behind the claims below. Contentful’s docs and Kontent.ai’s docs were not reachable when we checked, so those entries rely on what we know from projects and are marked.

Contentful
Contentful is the best known SaaS headless CMS. It offers a content delivery API, a GraphQL API and webhooks, with spaces and environments for staging content changes. A free plan exists, but we could not open its limits today, so we do not quote them. It fits organisations that run many sites and locales and want a vendor with a mature ecosystem. The usual complaint is that cost climbs as the number of users, locales and records grows. See our Contentful development services page for how we build with it.
Best for: enterprise teams with a long list of integrations. Skip if: you want a predictable, flat price at small scale.
Sanity
Sanity stores content in its hosted Content Lake and ships an open source studio you customise in React. Its free plan costs $0 with up to 20 seats, 2 public datasets, 10k documents and unlimited locales as of October 2026. The Growth plan is $15 per seat per month. Queries use GROQ. Our Sanity page covers typical projects.
Best for: developer-led teams that want to shape the editor. Skip if: editors need a ready visual page builder out of the box.
Storyblok
Storyblok pairs a component-based content model with a visual editor, so editors click a block on the live preview and edit it. The Starter plan is free: 1 seat (up to 2), 2 locales, 20,000 stories and 100,000 API requests a month. Growth is $99 a month, or $90.75 billed annually, as of October 2026. See Storyblok development.
Best for: marketing teams who want to edit on the page. Skip if: you need more than 2 locales on the free tier.
Hygraph
Hygraph is GraphQL-native, and it can federate content from other APIs through remote sources. Its Hobby plan is free with 2 locales, 3 seats and 500,000 API calls. Growth starts at $199 a month with 3 locales, and Enterprise is custom, up to 80 locales, as of October 2026. Our Hygraph page goes into model design.
Best for: GraphQL-first teams and multi-source content. Skip if: you prefer REST-only tooling or need low monthly cost at several locales.
Prismic
Prismic organises pages from reusable slices, which keeps marketing pages consistent while editors rearrange sections. The Free plan allows 1 user and 2 locales. Paid plans run from $10 to $675 a month, billed annually per repository, as of October 2026. Details on Prismic development.
Best for: marketing sites on modern JavaScript frameworks. Skip if: content is heavily relational, such as catalogues.
DatoCMS
DatoCMS has a relational content model and a GraphQL content API. The free plan offers 5 locales, 300 records and 100k API calls a month. Professional costs 149 euros a month billed annually, and extra locales cost 19 euros each, as of October 2026. We have no dedicated DatoCMS page, so ask us directly if you are weighing it.
Best for: multilingual sites and agencies handling several small projects. Skip if: you need more than 300 records on a free build.
Contentstack
Contentstack is an enterprise platform with a visual builder. Its pricing page lists Free at $0, Build at $29, Growth at $299 a month and custom Enterprise pricing, as of October 2026. The free plan includes 3 users, 10 content types and 1K entries. We did not verify its API feature set today. See Contentstack.
Best for: large organisations with governance requirements. Skip if: you want a small team setup with full self-service.
Kontent.ai
Kontent.ai, formerly Kentico Kontent, focuses on editorial workflow, roles and structured content for larger teams. Its pricing page shows slider-based quotes and states neither a free plan nor prices, so budget needs a conversation with sales. We did not open its docs today. Our Kontent.ai page describes what we build on it.
Best for: workflow-heavy, regulated content teams. Skip if: you need a self-serve free start.
How do you choose a SaaS headless CMS?
Start with the editor. If marketers need to edit on the page, shortlist Storyblok. If your developers want to design the editor, look at Sanity. Then check the pricing driver that will hit you first: seats at Sanity, locales at Storyblok and Hygraph, records at DatoCMS, API calls at Contentstack.
Next, test the exit cost. Export a sample of your real content, rebuild it in a second platform and measure the effort. If data control or flat pricing matters more than convenience, compare against self-hosted options, which we cover in our headless CMS agency service page, where we run selection workshops and migrations.
