If your marketing team builds and rearranges landing pages every week and wants to see each change on the page while making it, Storyblok fits better. If your content is mostly structured entries that feed several sites, apps and regions under one governance model, Contentful fits better.
This page is written for two readers at once: the Head of Marketing who will live in the editor, and the tech lead who will build and run the platform. Where their concerns differ, the sections below split them.
What is the core difference?
Storyblok is built around a visual editor. Pages are stories made of nestable components, or blocks, that developers define once: a hero, a pricing table, a testimonial row. Editors open the live page inside Storyblok, click a component and change it, or add new blocks from the library. As of October 2026, the Visual Editor is on every plan, including the free Starter plan.
Contentful is built around structured content. Developers define content types with fields and references; editors fill in entries through forms and check the result in preview. The same entry can feed a website, an app and a partner feed without change. Visual page building exists as Contentful Studio, an add-on for Enterprise plans.
| Storyblok | Contentful | |
|---|---|---|
| Editing model | Visual editor on the live page | Forms with preview |
| Content shape | Stories built from nestable components | Entries of typed content types with references |
| Page building | Native, every plan | Studio add-on on Enterprise |
| APIs | REST, GraphQL on Premium and Elite | REST delivery, GraphQL, preview, management, sync |
| Environments | Premium and Elite | Sandbox environments from the free Starter space |
| SSO | Premium and Elite | Enterprise |
| Best at | Landing pages and campaign sites | Multi-channel structured content and governance |
What does the Head of Marketing get?
With Storyblok, a campaign page is a drag-and-arrange job. An editor duplicates a page, swaps the hero, reorders sections and publishes, without filing a ticket. What they can do is bounded by the component library, so the page stays on brand.
With Contentful, editors work faster on repeatable content: product entries, articles, location pages, FAQs. They change the data, and the frontend decides the layout. A brand new page layout usually means a developer adds a content type or a template first, unless you buy Studio.
Collaboration tools are close. As of October 2026 Contentful Lite includes comments, tasks, scheduled publishing and live collaboration. Storyblok Growth includes single story scheduling, SEO meta tags and a Shopify integration.
What does the tech lead need to know?
On Storyblok, the main design decision is the component library. Too many components and editors get lost; too few and every campaign needs a developer. Nesting rules decide which blocks may sit inside which. Data that is not about layout, such as product specs, authors or office addresses, still deserves its own content types, so it is not copied across pages. GraphQL, environments and custom roles arrive only on Premium and Elite.
On Contentful, the main design decision is the content model and its references. Contentful gives you more API surface on every plan, sandbox environments with aliases for safe releases, and an App Framework for extending the editor. The cost is that marketers depend on developers for new layouts.
Either way, we build the frontend in Next.js with draft preview, static generation for stable pages and on-demand revalidation for the rest.
What do the plans include?
From the vendors’ pricing pages, as of October 2026:
| Plan | Price (monthly billing) | Seats or users | Locales | API requests a month | Traffic or bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Storyblok Starter | Free | 1 (max 2) | 2 | 100,000 | 100GB |
| Storyblok Growth | $99 a month | 5 (max 10) | 2 | 1,000,000 | 400GB |
| Storyblok Growth Plus | $349 a month | 15 | 10 | 4,000,000 | 1TB |
| Contentful Free | $0 | 10 | 2 | 100K | 50 GB |
| Contentful Lite | $300 a month | 20 | 3 | 1M | 100 GB |
Storyblok sells extra seats at $15 each on Growth and Growth Plus and gives each new space a 45-day trial of Growth Plus. Both vendors price their enterprise tiers on request.
What makes each bill grow:
- Storyblok: seats beyond the plan, locales beyond 2 on Growth, and the jump to Premium for SSO, GraphQL, environments or A/B testing.
- Contentful: the jump from Lite to Enterprise for more locales, spaces, governance features, Studio or an SLA.
How do they scale?
Storyblok scales by story count and component discipline. Growth Plus allows 100,000 stories and 10,000 assets; Premium and Elite lift those limits. Elite adds multi-space content distribution for groups with several brands.
Contentful scales by spaces and environments. Enterprise plans include an unlimited spaces allowance and connected spaces for brands and regions, which suits a global company with central governance.

How do you choose without a long evaluation?
Run a small pilot on real content instead of comparing feature lists. Both vendors make this cheap: Contentful has a free plan, and every new Storyblok space starts with a Growth Plus trial.
- Pick one landing page your team rebuilds often and one structured content type, such as a product, an event or an office location.
- Have a developer model both in each CMS and connect a bare Next.js page with preview.
- Ask two marketers to build a new variant of the landing page without help, and to update ten structured entries.
- Have the tech lead check the parts editors never see: how preview is wired, how locales are stored, which API features sit on which plan, and how content would leave if you switch later.
The marketers’ notes tell you about daily work. The tech lead’s notes tell you what running it will cost later. If the two point to different platforms, the content mix usually settles it: mostly pages points to Storyblok, mostly entries points to Contentful.
Which one we would pick for whom
- A marketing team that ships new landing pages every week: Storyblok. The visual editor removes most tickets.
- A company publishing the same content to a site, an app and partners: Contentful.
- A mid-size team of up to about ten editors on a budget: Storyblok Growth, as long as two locales are enough or you add more.
- A global brand with many regions and a central content team: Contentful Enterprise, for spaces, roles and governance.
- A team that wants both: Storyblok with strict content types for structured data, or Contentful with Studio if the Enterprise budget is there.
